With so many activities to do each day, we often have to remind people to take some quiet time for themselves throughout the week. In fact, "Free Time/R&R" is even listed on our schedule of activities. Since 1997, despite whatever else our Campers may say 'Camp' Camp is to them or has become, it is still first & foremost a vacation. Just perhaps the best one ever!⁠

When was the last time a vacation helped you play like a kid again? We try to keep the spirit & culture of a real kids' summer camp in mind when planning 'Camp' Camp. And though 'Camp' Camp has developed a spirit & culture all its own over the past 25 years that's definitely adult-oriented, we enjoy watching many of our Campers re-learned to play and interact with more abandon as the week progresses. We sneak in all sorts of subtle ways to get *all* of us to at least try to recapture being a kid again for at least a little bit.⁠

When 'Camp' Camp started over two decades ago, the country was a different place for queer folx. Ellen had just come out (and subsequently found her career temporarily in the toilet), and same-sex marriage didn't even seem possible. So in those early years our evening events seemed to frequently include things we LGBTQ folx never got to experience as kids or teenagers. Like ⁠
Spin the Bottle which quickly became a spectator sport, especially when the lesbians played. (To be fair, the gays did get their opportunity as well. But if our memory serves, the lesbians won this one!)⁠

To this day, our annual Tea Dance remains perhaps our Campers' favorite event of the week. Since 1997, Tea Dance has always taken place on Thursday afternoon and is traditionally held outdoors, though the exact location changed after the third or fourth year when our numbers got too large to keep it at its original venue. Even the years when rain forced the event indoors, it never dampened Campers' enthusiasm for Camp's most-iconic event — as you can tell by this pic! ⁠

Our Adventure Course (also known as the Ropes Course) sits pretty much at the center of the camp grounds — and feels pretty much like it's still the center of the 'Camp' Camp experience. In the early years of Camp, nearly everyone completed at least the "low ropes" part of the course with their Rainbow Group. Our numbers are now too large to accomplish that, but we still strongly encourage all Campers to at least try the course. It somehow still represents the "step out of your comfort zone" culture of 'Camp' Camp for many of our Campers, especially those who have been around for awhile!⁠

Many things have changed about 'Camp' Camp since 1997, but one thing that hasn't is that we've always offered a combination of outdoor, athletic, and creative activities to appeal to and challenge all sorts of LGBTQ folx. And we've always encouraged Campers to step out of their comfort zone and try something new, not just those activities that they are comfortable or familiar with. For some Campers, stepping out of their comfort zone means throwing a ball in Softball, for others it's throwing some clay in Pottery class or throwing it down onstage in our Lip-Sync Throwdown! We've had any number of Campers return home and take up hobbies or sports based on activities they discovered at Camp.⁠

We've found that the more people try something new and out of their comfort zone while at 'Camp' Camp, the more likely they are to find their week a memorable vacation. ...Perhaps they might even say their 'Camp' Camp vacation is the best time ever!⁠

Like many traditional kids' summer camps, we've always taken a group photo of our Campers each year for posterity's sake. But as Camp has grown from 88 Campers back in 1997 to nearly 250 in recent years, we've had to occasionally move the location of the group photo shoots over the years. What started with a photographer at a window at the top of a staircase in 1997 has evolved through various locations, wherever we can get a photographer (safely!) up high enough to get all our Campers in the photo.⁠

Look through our Instagram feed, and you'll notice that our most fun photos come from our annual Tea Dance, a permanent Thursday afternoon fixture on our schedule since our first very year in 1997. But all those fun & fabulous costumes you see — and the "red carpet" walk that is so popular in recent years — haven't always been part of Tea Dance. That tradition evolved over the course of a number of years, but started with this guy in the middle as you see him right here. Bob de Luna of New York City just randomly showed up at Tea Dance the second year of Camp wearing seemingly nothing but shaving cream. Over the next 5 or so years, he showed up in more elaborate costumes, usually making grand entrances, until more & more Campers decided to join in the fun. Another popular Camp tradition that has survived since our very first year in 1997 is our Rainbow Groups, groups of 12-15 Campers & Staff—little cross sections of each summer's attendees—who meet each morning to receive Orientation information and to participate in fun ice breakers and daily check-ins, etc. They're a great way for Campers to meet & connect with people quickly without the pressure of a large group setting. (Like everything at Camp, attendance is optional, but many of our Campers find them to be a highlight of their week.)⁠

In 1997, we had 8 Rainbow Groups of about 8 people each; however, over the past decade or more, we've needed as many as 20 Rainbow Groups of 12-15 people to accommodate all our Campers!⁠

The summer camp we lease for 'Camp' Camp is situated between several gorgeous natural ponds and has a swimming area with a sand beach, so our waterfront has always been a popular place. It's been even more popular in the past 10 years or so, as more and more of our Campers make us an annual destination. Even with over 30 activities to do each day, many of our returning Campers are content to spend many of their afternoons simply relaxing with all their Camp friends down at our gorgeous waterfront. ⁠

It feels like rain has always been a rare occurrence in the 23 summers we've been lucky enough to be in Maine for Camp. (COVID-related cancellations this and last summer have made our appreciation for Maine even greater.) But the rain never seems to dampen the smiles on our Campers' faces! They're as much a part of 'Camp' Camp as the activities, traditions, and great social events that make up each annual week in Maine. This photo pretty much sums up how I've felt (on my best days) over the past 16 months. I don't usually post from a personal perspective here on the Camp IG, so this is an exception.

Our IG has been dormant for most of the past year+. And that's on me. My pandemic-addled brain just couldn't fathom a way to promote/celebrate Camp when a damn virus was robbing us of such an amazing, soul-enriching week.

And while I'm confident that going virtual again in 2021 was the right decision—especially in light of this damn Delta variant—it's still utterly disappointing & demoralizing to miss another summer, especially since this year is technically our 25th anniversary. Plans to celebrate our 25th have been bouncing around my brain for years, but I've struggled since COVID to find a way to even acknowledge it with what feels like an appropriate fervor when we can't celebrate it *in* Maine, which is such an integral part of the week.

Anyway... this is just my typically longwinded way of saying that I'm gonna try to fire up this damn Instagram account again, likely with some focus on the fact that our scrappy little LGBTQ event has lasted a quarter of a century.

So, stay tuned for this page's return to (at least some) life, most likely focusing on vintage/throwback Camp photos. I encourage veteran Campers to comment with whatever memories the photos inspire and to forward their own pics/memories for consideration as part of this IG.

And while I do still struggle with the reality of a second Maine-less summer, that doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to Virtual Camp. Last summer made it clear that the spirit & culture of Camp transcends gathering online and that Virtual Camp really *is* the next best thing to a best-time-ever week in Maine. It's not too late folks, if you want to come to 'Camp' Camp! It really is the #BestTimeEver! Don't take it from just me, here are some amazing testimonials! Also, in the comments is the link to the open staff positions. If you think it's too pricey, your can offset the cost! I do! About half of us do! Even the "work" is fun!
