time to have fun & give back

August 14, 2013 By Camp Camp Leave a Comment

Well, it’s almost time… ‘Camp’ Camp 2013 is just a few days away! We’re hosting a sold-out crowd of 242 people from all over the country, plus Hungary and the U.K., each of them ready to have the best time ever! Thirty-eight of this year’s Campers have been with us for an unbelievable 10 years or more, including this year’s 15th-Year Campers, Cheryl S. of Medford, MA, Phil C. of Quincy, MA, and Vicki H. of Ann Arbor, MI. This year, we will again be continuing our (recent) tradition of donating $100 in each of their names to the It Gets Better Project in honor of their noteworthy Camp anniversary.

Last year, we stepped up our efforts to support the GLBT community even further with our new “Camp Gives Back” campaign. With this campaign, we are donating 10% of our Camp Store sales each year to an organization benefitting the GLBT community. Last year, we were able to donate almost $1100 to Mainers United for Marriage, one of the organizations instrumental in helping Maine make history last November when they became the first state in the country to pass marriage equality by voter referendum. Yay, Maine!

logoThis year, we have chosen The True Colors Fund as the recipient of our “Camp Gives Back” campaign. The True Colors Fund was co-founded in 2008 by musician Cyndi Lauper and, through their Give a Damn Campaign, aims to inspire and engage everyone, especially straight people, to become active participants in the advancement of equality for all. Their Forty to None Project helps to raise awareness about and bring an end to GLBT youth homeless. Both worthy causes, don’t you think?

Those of you who will be attending Camp next week can help the True Colors Fund in their efforts by just buying an extra Camp t-shirt or souvenir or two (or three) in the Camp Store. You’ll also be able to make additional donations to True Colors via your Cashless ‘Camp’ Camp account. If you aren’t able to attend Camp this summer, we suggest popping over to the True Colors Fund and making a donation. Being a teenager is difficult enough, yet each year between 500,000 and 1.6 million youth find themselves homeless in America. As many as 40% of these youth find themselves homeless because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Camp hopes our efforts will help at least a little in raising awareness of their plight and getting some of these kids the assistance, education, and empowerment they deserve.  We encourage you to join us – and make a donation today.

those gays are everywhere!

June 3, 2013 By Camp Camp 2 Comments

For the past 16 years, GLBT people from all over the world have joined us in southwestern Maine for one of the most fun, unique GLBT vacations in the country. When we ask our Campers each year what surprises them most about Camp – or what brings many of them back again and again – the answer we receive more than any other is: the people. Well, if it is the fun & amazing people at Camp are a big part of what helps make it the best time ever, it looks like ‘Camp’ Camp 2013 – our 17th fabulously fun summer – will be no exception!

This August, our Campers & Staff will be arriving from 34 different states in the U.S. and three different provinces in Canada, as well as Hungary and the U.K. As of June 6, the 212 Campers & Staff confirmed to attend Camp call the following cities home:

our new ‘camp gives back’ campaign

July 28, 2012 By Camp Camp 8 Comments

Over the past 16 years, it has become obvious that ‘Camp’ Camp is much more than a super-fun, unique GLBT vacation. Camp has evolved into a wonderfully fun, ongoing, supportive community of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender folks from all over the U.S. We are proud of – and extremely grateful for – this aspect of ‘Camp’ Camp. The supportive environment fostered at Camp makes it easy for people to step out of their comfort zone each day, accomplishing things they never thought possible. We have felt for some time that it’s important for Camp to try to share that kind of positive energy and give back to the GBLT community however we can. Well, now we will…

We began our efforts to return some of that great Camp energy and support to the GLBT community-at-large last year, our 15th Anniversary season. Instead of presenting last year’s two 15th-Year Campers with yet another anniversary gift emblazoned with the Camp logo (5th-Year Campers receive Camp blankets and 10th-Year Campers receive Camp wheeled duffle bags), we donated $100 in each of their names to the It Gets Better Project. And we will be doing the same again this year: $200 will again be donated to the It Gets Better Project, $100 each for Michele G. of Providence, RI and Lisa D. of Reading, MA, this year’s 15th-Year Campers.

New Games help you make new gay friends at Camp Camp, a summer camp vacation for GLBT adults in MaineAdditionally, beginning this year, we are stepping up our giving back even further with our new “Camp Gives Back” campaign. Each year going forward, we will be choosing one charitable or political organization benefitting the GLBT community and donating 10% of our Camp Store sales to that organization. We will also make it easy for our Campers & Staff to donate additional funds to the chosen organization through our Camp Store, as well. Yes, we operate on the proverbial shoestring budget and our Camp Store certainly doesn’t have sales in the tens of thousands of dollars, so we know any donation that we make will be modest, at best. But, this is one small way that we can further support the GLBT community-at-large that all of our wonderful Campers & Staff are part of.

We are pleased to announce that we have chosen Mainers United for Marriage to receive our campaign’s inaugural year donation. ‘Camp’ Camp has been held in Maine since our very first year in 1997 – and we love Maine! It’s a beautiful state with friendly, welcoming people who have always made us feel at home. In 2009, Maine was the first state to pass a same-sex marriage law through the legislature and have it signed by the governor, only to have opponents of the law overturn it by a mere 30,000 votes.

Well, earlier this year, Mainers United for Marriage gathered over 105,000 signatures to bring a pro-marriage Citizens Initiative to the ballot this November. Additionally, the most recent polls of likely 2012 voters in Maine show a 54% support for marriage equality, making Maine the first state ever to begin a marriage equality campaign with a majority of support. In short, Maine could make history this November and turn the tide for marriage equality across the country! So, we would like to do whatever we can to help them in their efforts.

Those of you who will be attending Camp next month can help Mainers United for Marriage in their efforts by just buying an extra Camp t-shirt or souvenir or two (or three) in the Camp Store. If you aren’t able to attend Camp this summer, we suggest just popping over to the Mainers United for Marriage website and making a small donation. We can all be part of history, helping to ensure that gay & lesbian relationships in Maine – and possibly even all across the country – finally get all the rights, benefits and recognition they deserve.

only 30 days to go…!

July 20, 2012 By Camp Camp 4 Comments

Early Morning at 'Camp' Camp, a summer camp experience for GLBT adults in MaineWell, here we are, just 30 days away from the start of ‘Camp’ Camp 2012 (according to our swell new countdown clock!)… I can’t believe it’s approaching so fast again – OR that this year will mark my 16th year at Camp. Egads! I am admittedly always a wee bit (or more) overwhelmed this time of year, running on fumes, and would practically sell my mother (not really… Yvonne totally rocks) for a few more hours of sleep each night. Yet, it still also amazes me how excited I still get about Camp – even after 16 years. And if you knew how easily I can get bored with things, you’d understand the significance of my commitment to something for 16 years…

I get most excited about seeing everyone again and just BEING at Camp – and I get excited when things all start falling into place, despite the fact that things are usually doing so while I’m seemingly putting out 100 (camp)fires a day. This week alone, we lost two staff people in as many days – then one of last year’s Staff IMs me asking if we might happen to have something for him, as he can swing the time off after all. Done! And, then – well… that’s probably just one of the (camp)fires I should even mention.

Then, there’s the excitement (or is it relief?) that comes from finding that seemingly illusive staff member out of the blue. This year, it was a Jewelry Instructor. Last year, for the first time in 15 years, we were unable to offer Jewelry classes because we couldn’t find an instructor. To make matters worse, it was our first-ever sold year, and with Jewelry always being a popular class, I knew there’d be some mightily disappointed Campers. I was starting to worry it was gonna happen again this year. Then – viola! – my 20 or so emails to art schools and studios this past Sunday paid off, and we received an email from a gay metalsmith/jewelry designer from Portland who had seen the posting from one of the studios I had emailed, checked out the website (and it was even our old outdated one), watched one of our videos, and was excited for the opportunity to be a part of Camp. It’s exciting to know the Campers will be happy – and exciting to have a new, experienced, enthusiastic person on our Staff.

So, I shall forge on through the next 30 long days at my law firm “survival” job on 5 hours of sleep, wishing I could be tackling all the Camp work that’s piling up – especially since I find it infinitely more rewarding. And because I can remember the end goal which always seemingly culminates during each year’s Tea Dance: Betsy and I inevitably run into each other on the dance floor, look around at all the laughing, sweaty, smiling, happy people dancing with abandon, then look back at each other and say, “Wow. Look. This is like Heaven on Earth, and we did this.”

Yup. Totally worth a month or more of too little sleep, for sure…

Camp on,
Kerry Riffle

welcome to the new campcamp.com!

July 18, 2012 By Camp Camp 1 Comment

Welcome to ‘Camp’ Camp’s new website! This year marks ‘Camp’ Camp’s 16th year as America’s premier summer camp for GLBT adults, and we’re celebrating with a new look: a brand new logo and a long-overdue, updated, expanded website.

Over the past 15 years, Camp has become much more than just an ongoing fun and unique vacation option for GLBT travelers. It’s become it’s own fun, supportive, amazing community of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people from all over the country. Yes, many of us gather for one week each August in Maine to have the best time ever, but the spirit that pervades that week – a spirit of true camaraderie, support and encouragement – manages to find its way into the other 51 weeks of the year as well.

For that reason, we wanted to focus more on the Camp community here on our new site. Our Facebook status updates now stream directly to the site’s home page, and you’ll find easy, quick links to our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages on just about every other page of the site, too. We’ve also added several pages that give visitors more information about some of the fun people who are a part of the ‘Camp’ Camp community, from a new page with bios on our Directors and Executive Staff to a totally revamped links/resources page that features websites and blogs owned, operated or written by our Campers & Staff instead of a bunch of random GLBT websites.

So, have a look around, get to know us better, maybe bookmark a few pages – and check back often! Our Camp community is continually evolving and growing, and we hope our new online home will do the same. Maybe if you stop by often enough, you’ll get a sense that we (and our Campers & Staff) aren’t kidding when we say that ‘Camp’ Camp is the best time ever – and then, hopefully, we’ll actually see you in Maine some August very soon…

Everything was my favorite thing!
Buck M. (he/him), San Francisco, CA
All the evening activities were outstanding. So much fun!
Glynn G. (she/her), Lowell, MA
I’ve been to festivals and conventions, and even camp as a kid, and been overwhelmed by the number of people, and felt lost in the shuffle. That didn’t happen here! Returning Campers and Staff, as well as other first-years, were very friendly. I never felt alone or isolated.
Faris Y. (she/her), Ann Arbor, MI
It truly is an incredible week: a time to connect with old friends, to make new ones, and to take a breath and go with the flow. A choose your own adventure!
Dustin F. (he/him), San Francisco, CA

Camp has become a yearly necessity, like taxes but far more pleasurable!

Thom H. (he/him), Salem, MA
The people and the community are always what bring me back.
Amy P. (she/her), Claremont, NH
…I truly feel wanted & like I am part of this family. Camp has enveloped me in love and shows me that I am valuable just as I am – no strings attached.
Collette B. (she/her), Waxhaw, NC
I have never experienced such a sense of community, support, love, candor, and friendship. The queer community and the larger world can be devastatingly brutal at times especially for those of us who already suffer from a lack of confidence or self-worth. I will be forever grateful for finding my kind.
Sean B. (he/him), Reisterstown, MD
I’ve traveled a lot, and I’ve never found another place as warm and welcoming as ‘Camp’ Camp; not even close!
David P. (he/him), Camillus, NY
Camp simply recenters me. Makes me remember what’s important in life.
Doug S. (he/him), Arleta, CA
…I gained a community of loving, caring, generous people to share the rest of the journey with.  The comradery, the laughs, the tears… I could never have predicted or expected to be loved and accepted without condition.
Angela F. (she/her), Phoenix, AZ
I LOVE the people, the activities, the sincerity in everyone in their genuine desire to be free and authentic.
Joe S. (he/him), Enterprise, AL
The summer camp experience itself was everything I hoped it would be, and the people were beyond my wildest expectations. I have never felt so free.
B B. (they/them), Gallatin Gateway, MT
I was really able to just relax and be social when I wanted to and be in solitude when I needed. No pressure to do anything. All the smiles and hellos and laughing. Something I miss in everyday life.
Rick R. (he/him), Sacramento, CA
I really found incredible friendships this year. Almost as soon as Camp started, I found a really solid group of new friends in my cabin that felt like I’d known them forever (in addition to my friends from last year!) We laughed, cried, danced, jammed, explored, shared secrets, and supported each other unconditionally throughout the week. My heart felt so full. I can’t wait to see them again next year!
Amber B. (she/her), Lexington, KY
Totally fabulous. …The spirit of Camp is so joyful and fun and silly and accepting all at once.
Daphne B. (she/her), Mashpee, MA
My friends never stop talking about it, and now I know why!
Jason S. (he/him), Brooklyn, NY
…as an adult man living my truth without the fear of judgment was the best thing I’ve ever experienced.
Jeffrey W. (he/him), Sparks, NV
This place changed my life. I am a better person because of Camp.
Geoff L. (he/him), Los Angeles, CA
It’s one of the few places I feel most seen for who I am and valued for it in a way I don’t feel valued for it in the world all the time. It lifts me up for the rest of the year.
Jon M. (he/him), Brooklyn, NY
This is the most incredible creation of community and culture I believe exists on this planet, and that’s not just for queer people.  I can’t imagine cultivating this type of non-judgmental, loving and edifying space anywhere else.
Chris D. (he/him), Arlington, MA
‘Camp’ Camp has woken up the joys of living, of experiencing life, of socializing with people, all sorts of innocence lost with age and work…
Kat L. (they/them), Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

For the first time in my 44 years, I found a place, a people, where I belong. … I march to a different drum. But at ‘Camp’ Camp, EVERYONE does. We are all beautiful, loving misfits, and I was seen, truly seen, for the first time ever. You can go your whole life without ever finding that.

Aletha G. (she/her), Colonial Beach, VA
I cannot imagine not seeing this wonderful family every year. Camp has gotten me through some of the worst and has celebrated some of my best times.
Kim S. (she/they), Fowlerville, MI
I can’t imagine not returning. I love the people and the freedom to be fully myself.
Erich N. (he/they), Armington, IL

It’s a magical place, made up of the kindest people, the warmest, most supportive culture, offering the funnest activities, in the most beautiful setting, and it is still somehow so much more than that. …if I didn’t return, I would feel like something really special and important in my life was missing.

Anne D. (she/her), Washington, DC

‘Camp’ Camp is my happy place.

Coco H. (she/her), Hollis Center, ME
I loved having an immediate and deep connection to all Campers, and the sense of family that was ever-present. I’ve never felt so self-confident in my entire life, because the openness of the Campers was so absolute.
Kevin J. (he/him), Louisville, KY
I return to Camp because it’s a week I can recharge, cut off, and be in a puddle of love for the week.
Richard H. (he/him), Sainte-Julienne, QC
Camp has changed the way I feel about myself. It fills my heart with so much love and joy that I can make it through another year in the Heteronormative world. Camp is SO healing.
Clare N. (she/her), Morro Bay, CA
…just do it. It is a life changing experience and you will not regret it. I flew 24 hours to get there, so worth every moment.
Brett P. (he/him), S. Perth, Australia
I had a truly life-changing time at Camp last year. The warmth, friendliness, and complete lack of cliqueishness was incredible and addictive.
Zach B. (he/him), New Orleans, LA
I fell in love with the whole ‘Camp’ Camp community, my new queer family.
Noam A. (he/him), South Burlington, VT
It’s affordable and awesome!
Sam A. (she/her), Chesapeake, VA
Seeing younger people shout out old people and older people shout out young people. That intergenerational connection always makes me cry. It’s so rare!
Michael G. (he/him), Brooklyn, NY
It really exceeded all expectations!! I can’t really think of much that I would change about my Camp experience, I really liked it all and was impressed by everything.
Finley W. (they/them), Yorktown, VA
This has been an experience of a lifetime. I have no words to describe the amazing experience.  All I have is gratitude.
Jose V. (he/him), Harrisburg, PA

I laughed and smiled more in one week at ‘Camp’ Camp than in the entire rest of the year. It was so inclusive and supportive and filled with utter joy!

Rick D. (he/him), Washington, DC
I’m close to my biological family but Campers are my chosen family, however odd and quirky. Every year I look forward to my annual family reunion. But what is becoming more important for me is how Camp gives space to all those loving, odd, quirky folks who find their way to Camp and are finally able to be in such a loving, fun-loving, accepting space.
Ann G. (she/her), Topsham, ME
It is a week where your face hurts when you leave because you laughed and smiled so much. It is a week that invigorates you and makes you want to carry the acceptance, happiness, honesty and caring to those in our outside worlds.  …I always leave ‘Camp’ Camp feeling like there is hope that the world can become a better place…
Mary Ellen M. (she/her), Birdsboro, PA

I didn’t think I’d get such a substantial emotional return on this investment but this space has really helped me learn to love myself more.

Olivia R. (she/her), Lancaster, PA
Along with the people, Camp gives me a chance to totally & completely unplug. I can relax, something I seldom do for myself. I feel safe at Camp.
Charles L. (he/him), North Easton, MA
The people and the activities were the best. Everyone was so friendly and open. I just met some amazing people…
Jordan B. (he/him), Halifax, W. Yorkshire, UK
Ever since I set foot at Camp in 2023, I knew this was going to be home for me. The people, the connections, the vulnerability, the joy, the laughter, the tears — it all keeps me coming back. Nothing else in the world compares to this week.
Kat T.R. (they/them), East Boston, MA
‘Camp’ Camp is a safe, embracing, loving, exciting, entertaining, outgoing, respectful, joyful, honest space. I cannot pass that up.
Christina K. (she/her), Lawndale, CA
I love ‘Camp’ Camp! The people, the beautiful place, the amazing sense of community, the fun activities, it’s all a wonderful mix that creates one of the best vacations I’ve ever had.
Elaine B. (she/her), Oakland, CA
…one of the most supportive and LGBT-friendly environments I have ever experienced.
Warren H. (he/him), New York, NY

buzz

I cannot imagine not seeing this wonderful family every year. Camp has gotten me through some of the worst and has celebrated some of my best times.
Kim S. (she/they), Fowlerville, MI
‘Camp’ Camp is a safe, embracing, loving, exciting, entertaining, outgoing, respectful, joyful, honest space. I cannot pass that up.
Christina K. (she/her), Lawndale, CA
Totally fabulous. …The spirit of Camp is so joyful and fun and silly and accepting all at once.
Daphne B. (she/her), Mashpee, MA
It’s one of the few places I feel most seen for who I am and valued for it in a way I don’t feel valued for it in the world all the time. It lifts me up for the rest of the year.
Jon M. (he/him), Brooklyn, NY
I return to Camp because it’s a week I can recharge, cut off, and be in a puddle of love for the week.
Richard H. (he/him), Sainte-Julienne, QC
Camp simply recenters me. Makes me remember what’s important in life.
Doug S. (he/him), Arleta, CA
Everything was my favorite thing!
Buck M. (he/him), San Francisco, CA
