
Many people who first hear about ‘Camp’ Camp have similar questions about whether or not Camp is the right gay vacation for them, so we compiled a list of the most FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) along with our responses.

Campers tend to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, non-binary, or “questioning” people who enjoy being active outdoors, playing sports, and/or exploring their creative side. They also enjoy being around other people — even if they are a little intimidated by meeting lots of strangers — as well as trying new things and challenging themselves.
Camp is usually attended by 200-250 people, and all gender-identities are welcome. In recent years, about 55% of Campers identify as male, 40% as female, and 5% or so as non-binary/genderqueer — our swiftest growing demographic. Most summers see upwards of 30 states in the U.S. represented by our attendees, and we usually have a few folks from Canada in attendance as well. In recent years, we have also hosted folks from around the globe, including the U.K., Germany, Mexico, and Australia. About 80% of our Campers are single or attending without their spouses/partners, and they range in age from 21 to their 80s with most in their early- to mid-40s. (In 2025, our Campers actually ranged in age from 21 to 84!)
And yes, we always have a few people who identify as heterosexual at Camp, too. Queer allies are always welcome to join us, as long as they’re comfortable bunking in a cabin with a bunch of LGBTQ+ folks.

Our host camp is located in central Maine about 90 minutes north of Portland. It is about a 3-hour drive from Boston and a 7-hour drive from New York City. We offer complimentary shuttles to Camp that run from Portland International Jetport and Portland Transportation Center (busses/trains) as Portland offers the most economical fares and more choice on flight times.
Please note that we are unable to publicly provide the specific name or location of our host camp for security reasons. This has been our practice since 1997, but it unfortunately feels like even more of a necessity to ensure everyone’s safety in our currently fraught political landscape. Driving directions and the on-site mailing address will be provided as part of the Welcome Packet distributed to all confirmed/registered Campers & Staff a few weeks prior to the start of Camp.

Yes – and we moved to a fabulous, better-equipped facility in 2024, too! Our host camp is situated on a lake peninsula with over one mile of waterfront and features air-conditioned cabins and a variety of activity areas & buildings, all surrounded by lots of trees, greenery, and fresh Maine air. If you attended Camp prior to our 2024 season, you’ll find this new location less rustic and a bit easier to traverse with fewer hills and roots than our previous location. We’re now able to offer long-requested activities like archery and horseback riding, as well.
In addition to the one-mile of waterfront with multiple activity areas (including an inflatable aqua park), the campus also features a large Lodge with a dining hall, a variety of athletic fields and courts, an Arts Center with separate areas for a variety of arts & crafts, a Ropes Course & Climbing Wall complete with a zipline, a four-lane bowling alley, a heated outdoor pool with three 200′ waterslides, a well-equipped air-conditioned theater, and much more!

The summer camp facility that we lease offers 20 air-conditioned, barracks-style cabins which are our standard accommodations and included in your registration fees. These cabins all have electricity and single beds (slightly smaller than a twin bed) with built-in dresser drawers and small personal shelving nearby most beds. Inside each cabin are bathrooms with hot & cold running water at communal sinks and individual toilet and shower stalls. (And yes: we can accommodate Campers with CPAP machines. In fact, we doubt there’s a standard cabin without a CPAP machine in it at this point!)
These standard/communal cabins — each one re-christened for ‘Camp’ Camp with the name of a famous LGBTQ person such as Ricky Martin, Rachel Maddow, Bayard Rustin, or Elliot Page — are shared by groups of 12-18 Campers, depending on the cabin. (Most tend to have 10-12 people in them, depending on overall attendance.) Your registration form allows you to choose between gendered, non-binary, or all genders cabins. While most Campers opt for a gendered cabin, the other two options are great for those who feel more comfortable outside traditional binary options or who are open to bunking with all varieties of gender identities.
Based on your responses to a few simple questions on your registration form, we do our best to place you in a cabin with other compatible Campers: early risers with early risers, late night folks with late night folks, etc. The cabins are nice but “no frills”, and most will find the communal accommodations plenty comfortable for a week-long stay. The fun & camaraderie of living communally for a week is an integral part of a summer camp experience, and many of our Campers find their cabin mates become their most lasting Camp friends. We have a return rate of around 75%, and most of our Campers tend to request the same cabin year to year.
While we strongly encourage first-time Campers to bunk in a standard cabin to get the full ‘Camp’ Camp experience, we do now have a limited inventory of private accommodations available on a first-come/first-served basis for an additional fee. These surcharges range from $400 to $1000 for the week (single or double occupancy) depending on the specifics of the accommodations. A limited number of standalone private cabins with full/double beds priced at $1000 are available; however, most private options are simply private rooms with either a twin- or camp-sized (i.e., slightly smaller than a twin) bed in a shared building with either a private bath ($600) or a shared bath ($400). A few of these options can also accommodate two people as they have full/double beds.
Please keep in mind that our private cabins tend to sell out within the first 2-3 days of registration opening in February/March. Information on availability is provided on our registration form. If you are only interested in attending Camp if private accommodations are available, please e-mail us to confirm availability before registering.

Camp is easily accessible by plane, bus, or train, as we provide complimentary transportation from the Portland, Maine airport and bus & train station. We recommend arriving into Portland no later than 2:30pm on arrival day. Our host camp is approximately a 90-minute drive from Portland, and we want everyone to be able to get to Camp, register, and maybe even unpack before our post-Registration schedule begins at 5:30pm.
Due to airline schedules into Portland, if you’re flying in from the Midwest, West Coast, or internationally, you may find this timing difficult. If so, you may need to arrive the day before Camp begins and secure overnight accommodations. Most of the hotels in Portland are near the airport, and a hotel with free shuttle service to/from the airport is ideal as all of our complimentary shuttles to Camp depart from Portland International Jetport. However, both Lyft and Uber are available for those who’d rather stay overnight in Portland’s downtown areas of Old Port or the West End to explore the city.
You may also drive to Camp which is about a 3-hour drive from Boston and a 7-hour drive from New York City. Driving directions and our host camp’s exact address are provided in the Welcome Packet distributed to all registered Campers & Staff a few weeks prior to Camp. Parking at our new site is somewhat limited, so our Transportation Manager can sometimes assist in setting up carpools for those Campers driving from the New York City and Boston areas.

The last official event of the week is our annual ‘Camp’ Camp Dance Dance on the final night, so the last advertised day of Camp is strictly a travel/departure day. Most Campers plan their flights to leave between 11:00am and 3:00pm that day, and Camp again provides complimentary return transportation to the Portland International Jetport or Portland Transportation Center (busses/trains). Most people who are driving leave by noon.
Please be aware that if your flight leaves Portland between 5:00-9:00am on departure day, your travel from Camp may be scheduled as early as 2:00am.

Pack so that you can go seven days without doing laundry, as there are no laundry facilities at Camp. All dress at Camp is casual. (Remember: it’s just Camp!) Late summer temperatures in Maine can vary widely, so dressing in layers is most practical. A recommended packing list is included in the Welcome Packets that are distributed to all registered Campers & Staff a few weeks before Camp; however, a sample version is available in the meantime.
Many people find they wish to bring a notepad or journal & a pen and a good book. If you plan to do pottery or crafts, bring a set of grubby clothes, as you’ll get dirty. Some Campers like to bring fun/funky/flashy outfits, drag, or costumes for some of our annual Evening Social Events like our Barn Dance and Tea Dance. Descriptions about each season’s events — themed or otherwise — are included in the Welcome Packet that everyone receives a few weeks prior to Camp if you’d like to dress for themed occasions. (Examples of some past events can be found on our Evening Social Events page.) Of course, if costumes, etc. aren’t your thing, that’s okay, too: shorts and a t-shirt are a perfect outfit for socializing or dancing!
Please do not bring large amounts of cash, or valuable watches or jewelry. Additionally, bringing alcohol, non-prescription drugs, and weapons can result in expulsion from Camp. Details on our alcohol and cannabis policies can be found in the “What hours are the Camp bar open?” question below.
Cellphones are allowed, but their use is restricted to certain areas. We do recommend leaving other valuable electronics such as laptops and tablets at home so you can fully enjoy the Camp experience. Please note that ‘Camp’ Camp cannot be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal items, including electronic devices, and we cannot store them for you during the week. Campers who have needed to bring laptops, etc. in the past have kept them stashed in their cabins. Our Campers are generally very good about respecting personal space/property in the cabins, and we’ve never had reports around personal items being taken from cabins.

Absolutely not. You can do as much — or as little — as you want during your week at Camp. In fact, we have such a wide variety of activities, we often have to tell first-time Campers to slow down a bit or they wear themselves out by the third day of Camp!
While Camp is structured a lot like summer camp was when you were a kid, your attendance is not required at any of the activities or events. However, we’ve learned over the years that certain activities (like the Ropes Course and your daily Rainbow Group meetings) can make your Camp experience more memorable, so we may strongly recommend you try certain activities or attend certain events. In the end, though, you’re an adult and it’s your vacation, so you can do whatever you please. Spend your week sunning yourself at the waterfront all day and curled up in your bunk with a good book all night if you’d like… we won’t care at all.

‘Camp’ Camp is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to Campers with disabilities. Please be aware, however, that conditions at Camp are rustic (e.g., unheated cabins, unpaved or gravel paths & walkways, etc.) with a number of limitations inherent to many summer camps (e.g., select activities/areas accessible by stairs only, showers/toilets without grab bars, etc.) Given the reality of our location and facility, ‘Camp’ Camp is unfortunately a difficult, if not impossible, vacation option for those who rely solely upon a wheelchair or scooter for mobility.
In general, Campers typically walk unassisted or using a mobility aid, like a walker or cane, for an average distance of at least 1/4 to 1/2 mile on roads or paths that may include low- to moderate-grade inclines. Cabins and some activity buildings include at least 3-4 steps, and access to some activities requires navigating inclines or hills. Campers with disabilities must be self-sufficient or travel with another Camper who is capable of providing any necessary personal assistance during the week or in the event of an emergency.
To help make your week at Camp safe and enjoyable and to assess what Camp may be able to provide, it is important for you to notify us on your registration form of any physical, sensory, health, or mental health impairment for which you may require additional support. You should also let us know on your registration form if you’ll be traveling with a trained service dog. If you have questions about what Camp could reasonably provide and/or the accessibility of facilities, activities, and events during Camp in light of an impairment, feel free to reach out to us prior to registering. Simply e-mail us sufficient details of your condition so that we can help determine what you might need during the week. Based on certain current or pre-existing conditions, some activities or events may be unavailable or inaccessible to you.
Campers are not allowed to bring any personal electric transportation devices to use on campus without prior written consent from the Camp Directors and/or Risk Manager. This includes, but is not limited to, e-bikes, scooters (kickboard & seated), personal golf carts, powered skateboards & unicycles, quads or other off-road small vehicles, etc. All Campers who drive to Camp must leave their cars parked in the designated car parking lots for the week and may not use them to drive to cabins, activity areas, or other facilities.

While we do have several nurses and EMTs on staff, they are there to attend to the usual summer camp scrapes, bumps, and bruises and to act as on-site first responders in the unlikely event of a serious accident. Local ambulances/EMTs can take a minimum of 20 minutes to respond when called, and the nearest medical facility is a 15-20 minute drive away.
While Camp can pretty much be fun & games all the time, we understand that an often-loud, always-friend-filled environment can be overwhelming for a lot of people, including those who are neurodivergent. As an alternative, we do make available a dedicated sensory-friendly, low talk, quiet space complete with low-key, decompression activities for Campers to enjoy, such as adult coloring books, fidget toys, etc. Or you can just enjoy the space with the understanding of being uninterrupted or not spoken to, if you so choose. We want everyone at Camp to have the best time ever and encourage everyone to prioritize their own mental health during the week. Everyone needs a break sometimes!
We pride ourselves on offering a unique vacation experience to our Campers that is fun and minimizes safety risks. To that end — though it is rare — we may determine that the level of need you present may be too great to permit your attendance, in which case your registration may be cancelled and your registration fees refunded. Any Camper who fails to accurately disclose details about a current or pre-existing condition prior to arrival may be required to depart early if their needs or conditions present safety concerns for the Camper or others that cannot be reasonably accommodated. In such cases, registration fees are non-refundable.

Beer, wine, and other malt beverages are served at three or four of our Evening Social Events during the week and are included as part of your registration fees. A similar selection of alcoholic beverages is also available for purchase on most evenings from 10:30pm to 12:30am at our Best Time Ever Bar. A variety of non-alcoholic drink options are available at both events and our late-night Best Time Ever bar for those who do not consume alcohol.
In short, if you are looking for a queer vacation that has a party atmosphere 24/7, Camp probably isn’t the vacation for you. We mean it when we say Camp is the best time ever, but the fun is not focused on alcohol or drugs.
‘Camp’ Camp’s founder, Bill Cole, originally conceived of Camp as an alternative to alcohol- and sex-focused bars and other venues — a place where people could enjoy a different kind of environment than is typical in the LGBTQ+ community. To maintain Bill’s original vision for Camp — as well as for liability and safety reasons, and out of respect for those Campers in recovery — we do require that everyone attending Camp limit their alcohol consumption to those times/events where alcohol furnished by Camp is served. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ALCOHOL TO CAMP. Doing so is grounds for immediate removal from Camp without a refund. Non-prescription drugs — except for cannabis and over-the-counter medications — are also prohibited.
Recreational cannabis is legal in Maine, but its use at Camp is governed with similar when/where parameters as alcohol consumption. Cannabis use — including e‑cigarettes or vaping devices equipped with a cartridge or pod containing THC and/or CBD (including hemp-derived) — is permitted only at the Smokers’ Table and may only be consumed at the events/times when we are serving alcohol.
While edible consumption is permitted during these same designated times/events (they do not need to be consumed at the Smokers’ Table), beverages containing or infused with CBD or THC — including THC products labeled as “non‑alcoholic” beverages — are prohibited at Camp. Campers with prescriptions for medicinal cannabis use may dose as needed/prescribed, but they must present a valid prescription and coordinate their dosing with the Wellness Staff at the Health Center. Cannabis consumption outside of designated times/events or place is grounds for immediate removal from Camp without a refund.

Smoking — whether cigarettes, e‑cigarettes, vapes, or other smoking or vaping devices — is only allowed at Camp at the designated Smokers’ Table. The camp buildings and forest surrounding the campgrounds are very dry and flammable by the end of the summer when we’re on-site. If past years are any indication, you won’t be able to miss the Smokers’ Table: listen for the sounds of raucous laughter and animated conversation, just about any time of the day or night.
Recreational cannabis is legal in Maine and cannabis use at Camp is governed with similar when/where parameters as alcohol consumption and is permitted only at the Smoker’s Table during designated times/events. Further details on cannabis consumption can be found in the question immediately above.
The owners of the property and our insurance company require that ALL other areas of the campgrounds remain non-smoking, including the waterfront, cabins, and porches. We require everyone attending Camp to abide by this very important rule. Smoking or vaping in any location other than the Smokers’ Table, or cannabis use outside of designated times/events or place, is grounds for immediate removal from Camp without a refund.

No. While we certainly like to think of Camp as being sex-positive, we are definitely not sex-focused. That said, it is a bunch of queer adults running around together in the woods for a week, so we won’t lie and tell you the only activities happening are those found on the Activities Schedule.
Also, if you are looking to commune with nature wearing nothing but your birthday suit all week, ‘Camp’ Camp probably isn’t for you, either. We sometimes offer some nighttime skinny dips (weather/water temperatures permitting), but otherwise we are not a clothing-optional vacation.

Many of us have limited resources when it comes to vacation, so we know that $1975 for a week at ‘Camp’ Camp may come with a bit of sticker shock. Our fees are actually comparable with the cost of a week at most kids’ summer camps, but when you break down that amount and consider all that is included for less than $285 per day, Camp is actually an awesome value for your vacation dollar. (And that’s even before you consider our reduced-fee Staff program!)
Other adult summer camps — LGBTQ+ or otherwise — are comparably priced when broken down per day, but the vast majority of them only offer 2-3 day sessions versus our immersive week-long experience. And spending the same on a gay or lesbian cruise might only cover a mid-priced or low-end cabin to “domestic” destinations like Alaska or the Caribbean. Add in any off-ship excursions that usually incur additional fees, and your cruise now costs you $3000 or more.
When you vacation for a week in a traditional LGBTQ destination like Provincetown, your lodging alone will cost you at least $1500. Add in meals — even if you “eat cheap” and only spend $50 per day — and you’re already at $1850 for the week, and you haven’t even done anything yet. Add in a kayak trip at $45, a week’s worth of yoga classes at $20 each, some art classes at $650 (plus materials), and a couple of pottery lessons for $220, and your vacation is already costing you nearly $3000! And that’s before the costs of any evening entertainment.
At ‘Camp’ Camp, you can start your day with a yoga class, then go kayaking, take an art class and a pottery class — and that’s just one day. We also throw in three fresh, delicious restaurant-quality meals that day plus a fun evening social event that night. And you still have five more days like this ahead of you.

On top of all this, Camp also comes with a bonus that few other queer vacations can offer that’s nearly impossible to put a price on: you’ll be part of an amazingly warm & welcoming community of LGBTQ+ people from around the world. Living communally in group cabins and playing, eating, laughing, and dancing with the same 200+ people of all ages and gender identities from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds for a full week — not just a few days — is largely responsible for the deep connections that are such an integral part of the Camp experience.
Of course, it’s possible to pay even less than $1975 for your vacation at Camp. About half the people who attend each summer take advantage of our Staff program and pay as little as $475 for the week, exchanging hours worked during the week for a reduction in their fees. This is our version of a sliding scale which we can often combine with additional assistance from our Campership Fund to make Camp affordable for most people.

Your registration fees cover your activities, meals, lodging, and transportation to/from Portland, Maine, so most people find they don’t need a large amount of additional funds to enjoy Camp. That said, we occasionally offer off-site trips or a few select activities may require an additional fee or optional spending cash. (For instance, our off-site hiking trips usually stop at the local ice cream stand on the way back to Camp.)
Additionally, we have a Camp Store so you can take a little piece of ‘Camp’ Camp home with you! Our “Cashless ‘Camp’ Camp” program which allows you to run a tab for any purchases you make during the week, whether it be a new hoodie, mug, or other souvenir from the Camp Store, fee-based activities, or that sundry personal item you forgot. Our Drivers also run errands into town most days so you don’t miss out on any of the Camp fun should you need something from the outside world. You can place an order in the morning at the Camp Store for errand run items, and they are usually back for pick up before dinner. (A small fee applies.)
Details on how to enroll in the Cashless ‘Camp’ Camp program and which activities (if any) have additional costs are included in your Welcome Packet which is distributed to all registered Campers & Staff several weeks prior to Camp.

Just over half of the people who attend Camp each summer do so as part of our Staff, taking advantage of a reduced fee schedule in exchange for working during the week. By participating in our Staff Program, you’re able to attend Camp for as little as $475. The fact that around 75% of our Staff return year after year — just like our Campers — is probably an excellent indication that you can work at Camp and still have the best time ever!
Additionally, our Campership Fund allows those with a financial need to attend Camp by assisting them with payment of their fees. Camperships are awarded based on need, and all recipients are required to contribute towards their registration fees and/or be a part of our Staff. Camperships covering 100% of your Registration Fees are not available. The only other restriction is that Campership Fund recipients are not eligible to book private or semi-private cabins as additional fees are involved.
Instead, Camperships are traditionally granted in conjunction with a Staff position, allowing you to work fewer hours during Camp while still paying fees that fit your budget. For instance, if you apply to work on our Dining Hall Team at a Staff II level (part-time, or about 20 hours), the fees are normally $1125 for the week (an $850 discount) — but you may then also be granted some Campership Funds to reduce those fees even further.
We’re often able to work with you to help get your fees to an amount that’s affordable for you; however, Campership Funds are limited and granted on a first-come/first-served basis. To apply for Campership Funds, review the details on our Staff Program, which also includes a list of available positions, then complete a staff application for any position/s in which you may be interested. (Be sure to complete the whole application, including the interview questions, as we don’t consider incomplete applications.) Then, e-mail us after you’ve submitted your application to let us know you’re also in need of Campership Funds. Once we receive and process your application, we’ll set up a Zoom/phone interview to discuss available positions, including what Campership assistance you might need beyond the usual reduced Staff fees.
Many Campers, and even some Staff, elect to include a donation to the Campership Fund with their registration fees when registering. Donations are greatly appreciated, as the funds go a long way towards making sure Camp is affordable for all who would like to attend. (Donations to the Campership Fund are not tax-deductible at this time.)

One of the things of which we’re most proud when it comes to ‘Camp’ Camp is that it allows all Campers a unique opportunity to get to know other queer-identified folks regardless of their age, gender identity, and sexual orientation. We know that in the outside world connecting with other LGBTQ+ friends is often easiest when they share our own identity or are a similar age. Vacationing at ‘Camp’ Camp offers the unique opportunity to connect with over 200 new friends of all ages and identities with a variety of skills and interests.
We all carry misinformation and stereotypes about people — even others in our own community. However, if you come to Camp with an open mind, you’ll be surprised just how quickly you become great friends with any number of people you never thought you would.

Camp is located in a fairly remote area and, depending on your carrier, it may be difficult to get a signal on your cellphone throughout the grounds. Additionally, we strive to make Camp a natural and simple environment where the sounds you hear are laughter, the breeze in the trees, and the splashes of happy Campers diving into the lake — and where our interactions are more face-to-face than electronic. As many people do come to Camp to be “off grid” for the week, we do ask that Campers restrict their cellphone usage to designated areas and refrain from cellphone use throughout the grounds or in their cabin as much as possible.
Likewise, we do not provide access to computers or internet during Camp. Those Campers who may need internet access for work commitments have sometimes been able to connect to personal hotspots from their cellphone or a mobile hotspot acquired from their cell service provider. As with cellphones, we require that laptop or tablet usage happen in the areas specifically designated for cellphone or computer use so as not to disturb those Campers who do come to Camp to (literally) unplug for the week. (Actually, you might try it… it’s very liberating!) If you do need to bring your own laptop and require a work space, you should check in with office staff for suggestions.

While the grounds and cabins at Camp may be like you remember from camp when you were young(er), our food is not. In fact, our host camp’s kitchen staff make a special effort to make all the food plentiful, healthy, and delicious.
Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available at each meal, just be sure to note such menu requests on your registration form so the kitchen staff can plan accordingly. Let us know on your registration form if you have any other special dietary requirements, and we’ll do our best to take care of you.

Definitely! We offer a wide variety of activities, so you’ll find something to interest you. Plus, you aren’t required to participate in any of the activities, so you won’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Some Campers have a great time spending the whole week working on a Stained Glass or Pottery project, or exploring the outdoor activities we offer. Or you can just spend all day relaxing at the waterfront, chatting with friends, or sitting under a tree reading a book.
In addition, many people find that Camp is the perfect place to step outside their comfort zone and try something new, something they’ve always wanted to try — maybe even something they find a bit scary. For some Campers, that may be picking up a softball; for others, it’s making a piece of pottery or appearing onstage in our annual Talent/No Talent Show. Our activity instructors and the rest of our staff are great at creating a supportive atmosphere that makes it easy for everyone to try something new — and have a great time in the process.

Of course you can! Most people who come to Camp do so on their own. We’ve been doing this for over 25 years, so we know how to take excellent care of new Campers. In fact, the first day or so of Camp is programmed with first-time Campers in mind, and most of what we do then is geared towards helping everyone get to know each other and make friends quickly. Many first-time Campers say one of the most surprising things about Camp is just how welcoming everyone is and how easy it is to make friends.
Much of your first 24 hours or so at Camp is guided by your Rainbow Group Leader, who’s also one of the very first people you’ll meet upon your arrival. (Rainbow Groups are small groups of 12-14 Campers & Staff that meet to receive orientation information on the first day of Camp and then meet for a daily check-in each morning during the week.) Most people find their Rainbow Group offers an easy way to get to know people quickly without the pressure of a large group setting. In fact, seating for dinner your first night at Camp is by Rainbow Group, so you don’t even need to worry about where to sit.
In addition, over 75% of the people at Camp each year have been to Camp before, and they’re all very good at welcoming new folks to Camp. So, just leave those unadventurous friends of yours at home. You have over 200 friends you just haven’t met yet waiting for you in Maine!
