It is with much sadness that we announce that ‘Camp’ Camp 2020 unfortunately will not be happening this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We’ve had concerns for a while now about how exactly we’d be able to provide the “safe space” that’s the foundational tenet of our Mission Statement in the midst of a global pandemic. Then, Maine Governor Janet Mills recently announced her phased plans for “re-opening” the state, and our decision was made for us. With a prohibition on gatherings of more than 50 people and a mandated 14-day quarantine for those arriving into Maine from outside the state in effect for July & August, ‘Camp’ Camp simply – and sadly – cannot happen this summer.
This is a disappointing (though not completely unexpected) development, especially during such a frightening, challenging time for both the world and so many of us personally. After weeks of sheltering-in-place and other restrictions, nothing would be more welcome than frolicking in beautiful southwestern Maine for an amazing week of fun activities, delicious food, and fabulous new LGBTQ friends. But, aside from the restrictions the State of Maine has in place for this summer, we also realize that it’s in the best interest of not only our amazing ‘Camp’ Camp community but also our greater human community that we not gather together in person this year.
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need to wait until next summer to experience America’s premier summer camp for LGBTQ adults. We’re nearly done working through the immediate particulars & repercussions involved in this difficult decision, and, once that’s done, we’re diving right into planning a fun, full week of virtual ‘Camp’ Camp programming – including activities, cabin porch hang outs, and evening social events – for this August 23-30.
While those who have already registered for ‘Camp’ Camp 2020 will have priority access to the virtual programming, we anticipate much of it will be available for others on a fee-per-session basis. This will be a great opportunity for you to finally meet our fun & welcoming LGBTQ community and get a taste of why over 75% of our Campers return each year, which may help you decide to join us in person in the future.
We’ll be updating our website with details over the next few months on how to join in. You can also sign up for our e-newsletter via the upper-right corner of this page to make sure you’re notified about all the details as they’re released.
So while this may not be the summer you get to discover in person why our Campers say their week at ‘Camp’ Camp is the best time ever, we’re going to do our best to see that everyone will still have something to look forward to the last week of August and make some great memories with some brand new LGBTQ friends from across the U.S.
Everyone, please stay safe and well during this unprecedented, difficult time. Wear your masks, wash your hands, and make time for plenty of self-care if you can. Then, hopefully, we’ll see you virtually in August – and in person next summer!
