'Camp' Camp in the News

“Letters”

Dear Metro Weekly:

I read with great delight your two-part series on summer camp [“Camp Camping It Up”, 7/16 & 7/23/98]. You stirred memories and made me yearn to return. I had forgotten my comments about camp being a life-altering experience. If you could see my home today, you might well think I had made permanent adjustment to living with more dirt and more clutter.

We must take time to nurture our mind, body and soul, but more often than not, we do not make the time available. Camp Camp provided such an opportunity in a wonderful, nurturing, and supporting environment. It was seven days of nothing but fun without the intrusion of the outside world.

As I rode to the airport with fellow campers last year, we talked about life without radio, television, newspapers, telephones, computers, and day timers for an entire week. We not only “survived” the experience, but marveled at how wonderful it was to be away from that routine. But, as you sadly pointed out, readjustment to the real world was fast as news of Princess Diana’s death arrived within hours of our return home.

You captured the spirit and essence of the week so well. I hope others who read the articles do themselves a favor and take advantage of the opportunity for a wonderful yet very economical vacation.
